Z-SCAN ANALYSIS OF THIRD-ORDER OPTICAL NONLINEARITY OF LIQUID CRYSTALLINE AZO-POLYMER (RED-PEGM-3) DOPED CATALYST-FREE SONOGEL

Third-order non-linear optical effects, like nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction were studied in a novel synthesized liquid crystalline azobenzene compound bearing oligo(ethylene glycol) segments (RED-PEGM-3). This molecular structure was successfully implanted within a pure SiO2 matrix in order to improve their mechanical and thermal stability, as well as its laser damage threshold. The highly transparent silica glass was synthesized by means of a novel catalyst-free sol-gel method, induced by ultrasonic irradiation (sonolysis). The obtained hybrid mixture (sol-suspension) was suitable to fabricate organic-inorganic film layers by the spin-coating method. After drying, the hybrid sonogel layers were characterized using the Z-scan method, allowing the evaluation of the non-linear absorption and refraction parameters, results were compared with those obtained with standard Disperse Red 1 based sonogels and a pure reference sample. The aim of this research is to develop efficient nonlinear optical devices adopting the wave-guided format for optoelectronics and photonics prototypes.
